Rabbit Hole

My friend Ms. August (not to be confused with my aunt, the first Mrs. August) mentioned to me that Gotye reminds her of Peter Gabriel. And then, my cousin mentioned the same thing on his Facebook page. So now every time I hear “Somebody I Used to Know” I think of Peter Gabriel, because they are both so right. And when I think of Peter Gabriel, I start thinking of “In Your Eyes,” my favorite Peter Gabriel song. And then I think of Say Anything, and then I think of Lloyd Dobler holding a boombox over his head for Diane Court and then I wonder what in the world ever happened to Ione Skye? Does she still act? Why doesn’t John Cusack make movies I want to see anymore? I loved Serendipity and High Fidelity and Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil… Then I realize that Ms. August has done me a tremendous favor, because that song used to remind me of all the guys that have “screwed me over” (to quote Peter- I mean, Gotye) and now it makes me think of awesome 80s movies, which is a much more pleasant and entertaining line of thought than crappy boys I’ve dated. Now you know what it is like to live in my head. I’m sort of like Alice in Wonderland- give me a rabbit hole and I will fall down into it.

P.S. I know this isn’t exactly about dating, but Ms. August also said I’d never be able to discuss her in a blog because she usually doesn’t comment much on my lack of a love life. (Although, one time she gave my number to a stranger in Home Depot because she thought he was cute and nice- obviously it didn’t work out since we’re here now, but A++ for effort, friend!) I just thought I’d prove her wrong. Congrats Ms. A, you’re officially a “character” in my blog world!

P.P.S. If you need something to distract you from thinking about all the guys or gals that screwed you over when you hear this song, I recommend these cute kids’ “performance” as a possibly remedy. I think they really capture the essence of the lyrics and music, don’t you?

  1. Honestly, the thing I’m stuck on is that sometimes these kids actually switch places in the car. Are they for real? One of my kids would be screaming the “screwed me over” line at the other if he took HIS spot in the van….

(And this clearly demonstrates how I am way too far removed from the theme of your blog to ever guest post. HA!)

    • Haha! I really just wanted to post this video because it’s so cute! My guess is that they “filmed” it a few times and spliced it together, explaining the seat-switching. But they do seem to get along especially well for siblings…

And I am sure you have plenty of good relationship advice to share…
